Code Cafe > conversion of B use to E2 occupancy
Dear Rick,
Most likely you will need to have the building or space reclassified as an E Use Group if there are more than a handful of kids (more than 5 at any one time according to the International Building Code). If its an older facility it may require some accessbility upgrades or other remodeling. If it is just a handful of kids you should be OK with the current B Use Group. Since California's code is not currently based on the International Building Code (I believe they us NFPA 5000 - crazy if you ask me), I recommend contacting your local building dept. for details - there may be some slight variations in California. Better yet contact your favorite local architect. To lacate one, contact your local chapter of the American Institute of Architects - see www.aia.org.

If yes an we are reclassified as E2 what changes will be required to meet the requirements for E2 occupancy? We already have sprinklers installed as well as have a separate rear access.
