Code Cafe > saltwater flooding

We are being asked to help with the repairs in Florida following Hurricane Ivan. When saltwater has contaminated panelboards and switchgear, the NEMA guidlines are clear about replacing molded case circuit breakers but vague on actual gear repair or replacement. I could sure use some input, we want to do the best thing for these people. Thanks

Mark - From my experience, if it get wet it at all should be replaced. I just got back from doing flood damage assessment in Ohio and that's the recommendation that building officials and ESI's. The long term corrsive affects of salt water are difficult at best to gauge. Even though temporary fixes may get you throught the emergency, the problems are not just the immediate ones today. Over time and with potentially repeated flooding its impossible to draw the line. I don't know any professional or manufacturer that would be willing to stake their reputation on but replacement.
